responsible way. >> the president says he will not agree to any budget deal that extends current tax rates for the wealthiest americans and says his stand on that issue was validated by voters. congressional republicans have said they are willing to include new tax revenue in a deficit reduction deal but they have been adamant that the tax rates themselves do not increase. let's see how wall street is reacting to the news. not so good, down 124 points so far. one of the key moments in the news conference came when the president took on republicans critical of his handling of the 9/11 attacks on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. the president strongly defended susan rice his ambassador to the united nations. rice has come under fire for statements she made in the days immediately following the attacks that left four americans dead. >> she made an appearance at

the request of the white house in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence that had been provided to her. if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. >> senators mccain and graham have said they would block rice's nomination if she was named to replace hillary clinton as secretary of state. the president was also asked about the scandal that took down america's top spy, mr. obama saying he has no evidence that the former cia director's extramarital affair impacted national security. cbs news reporter danielle nottingham has more now from the white house. >> reporter: at his first press conference in 8 months, president obama faced questions about the widening scandal that forced cia director david petraeus to resign. >> by his own assessment did not meet the standards that he felt were necessary as the director of cia.

>> reporter: president obama addressed why he did not hear about the fbi investigation until after the election. >> we're not supposed to meddle in, you know, criminal investigations and that's been our practice. >> reporter: before he handed in his resignation, he had been scheduled to testify about the attacks in benghazi, libya. he has agreed to meet with lawmakers. details are being work out. the petraeus scandal is general advertising general john allen's future. the -- jeopardizing general john allen's future after he exchanged e-mails with a socialite jill kelley. the white house and lawmakers have expressed support for general allen in nato. >> general allen has said that he does not -- has not done anything improper. i think he deserves the benefit of an investigation. >> reporter: one anonymous email from several months ago

warned allen to stay away from kelley. sources say the email came from the mistress of david petraeus, paula broadwell. broadwell warned that kelley was a seductress. nancy pelosi says she wants to stay where she is at. at a news conference this morning pelosi says she will seek re-election as the democratic leader of the house. she will have to win a vote during leadership elections after thank. the 72-year-old pelosi -- after thanksgiving. the 72-year-old pelosi served in congress since 1987. she also got a little upset with one reporter during the conference and his question about her position and her age. >> stay on prohibit younger leadership were moving forward. >> so you're suggesting that everybody step aside? >> simply saying that to delay younger leadership from moving forward not house. >> let's honor it as a legitimate question. [ laughter ] >> although it's quite

offensive that you don't realize it i guess. the fact is, that everything that i have done in my almost -- i guess decade now of leadership is to elect younger and newer people to the congress. >> there you go. democrats say her re-election as house speaker is virtually guaranteed. well, it's a dirty job and daly city public works has to do it. cleaning up the mountain of mud that plowed into a residential neighborhood and swallowed up a park. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is near hillside park in daly city where crews are already hard at work. >> reporter: at this point it's a race against time amend weather. there is still a lot of mud to get rid of but city officials say with the impending rain the first priority is to make sure the mu doesn't spread back to

the streets. workers were at it again hauling away more of yesterday's landslide aftermath but the priority isn't clearing up the park but making way for mother nature. >> what we're doing is trying to create a buffer zone around where you can put the hay bales to hold it in place so the mud will stay through the weekend number we get a better -- right now we're fighting the weather. we want to get the weather taken care of first. >> reporter: we saw the worst of it yesterday. from our cbs 5 chopper you can see the damage 45,000 gallons of water from a busted pipe can do. >> once we saw the hillside and saw it coming down, that was the first time that i had realized how lucky we were. >> reporter: emanuel and his family's house was next to where the hill caved in. his car was one of the many engulfed by much. the city is bringing in extra equipment to prep the land for the rain and when it clears, the next move is to clear the park. >> we plan to cut a perimeter around the park where there's an existing storm drain as part

of the burying the water and then uncover the storm drains buried to brick the water off to the drains. >> reporter: as scary as it was for neighbors some see it as a positive letting the city know work needs to get done so it doesn't happen again. >> it's a blessing in disguise because now maybe they will really realize this is not going to be able to sustain any kind of development whatsoever. >> the city doesn't have estimates on how much the damage will cost the city just yet, as for the pipes in the area, they are working on restoring and repairing the ones in the city. we have heard some are as old as 100 years. so that will be something they will be moving towards in the future but right now the priority is prepping for the potential rain that might be coming to the area. live in daly city, back to you >> thank . thank you. from bodega bay to half

moon bay, anne makovec reports on the expectation for crab season. >> reporter: there will be fewer crabs in year and they will be more expensive likely than the opening of the season last year. exactly how much more though remains to be seen. >> it's time for the crab rodeo. >> reporter: today they are loading up the traps and dropping them in the bay hoping for a big harvest when the commercial crab season opens at midnight tonight. >> we do the dance every year. and this year, it worked out. >> reporter: he is referring to negotiations with crab wholesalers as they try to agree on a price. last year, they couldn't, delaying the commercial season until after thanksgiving. but this year, fishermen are getting three dollars a pound, about 50 cents more than last year. >> the planets must have been aligned. >> reporter: restaurants are still trying to figure out what the price will mean to their bottom line. >> the price isn't going to be cheap because the fishermen wanted more money this year. >> reporter: the extra cost

will likely be passed to the consumer but he says it will be worth it. the average crab this season is expected to be between a pound and three-quarters to two pounds each. >> i think it's going to be very full. so when you crack the crab, the meat will be very plentiful inside. and the taste of course of the local crab is excellent. >> reporter: get them while you can. fishermen say there are fewer crabs to harvest this time around. >> it's just the cycle. crab is cyclical like anything. >> reporter: you think year is going to be low? >> i think we're at the bottom of the cycle. >> reporter: enthusiasm isn't. >> get your pots of saltwater boiling and get ready to go! >> reporter: back out here live now, pier 45 in san francisco has been busy prepping all the boats and the traps for the season. fresh crab should be on the market by tomorrow afternoon. live in san francisco, anne makovec, cbs 5.

a one-time "doctor of the y" it was like a bomb went off in the car. she hit me like -- i just thought it was all over. >> well, a one-time doctor of the year says she was not under the influence at the time of the violent crash in

massachusetts. take a look. dr. kristin howard suddenly comes speeding from a park lot over a median and on to a street where as you can see she slams into two other cars. the 56-year-old pled not guilty to driving drunk and to being under the influence of prescription drugs that were prescribed by herself. she says her car had a mechanical problem. she has been relieved of duties at a local e.r. for the time being. toyota is recalling millions of corollas and prius cars for a steering problem. the recall affects 2.7 million vehicles worldwide. about 700,000 of those were sold right here in the u.s. the recall includes prius and corollas made between 2000 and 2009. affected owners will be notified by mail starting next month. the web may be the best tool for tracking the flu. new research out of bristol university found that social media can be faster than the government at detecting an outbreak. several internet models have tracked flu-related searches and keywords in posts and tweets. the models are able to give

health officials a warning before the centers for disease control which gets its information from doctors, hospitals, and lab results. keeping your man faithful could be as easy as a spritz of love spray. get this. a study found men in a committed relationship in using a spray with a mixture of the hormone oxytocin were more likely to keep their distance from another woman they considered attractive. the nasal spray had no effect on single men. it did not affect the distance participants kept between themselves and other men. so who knows? it could work. >> i won't be buying any of that anytime soon. >> no. >> i'm easy. just a good home cooked meal and i'm a happy man. even 67 in santa rosa. so working on a spectacular afternoon. just a few high clouds drifting across our skies from time to time. these temperatures staying mild to warm outside. tonight we'll notice changes, partly cloudy skies and the rain could make a return as early as late thursday into friday. right now high pressure over the state of california. a few clouds continue to move over the top of that ridge. other than that, we are looking good right now. and then we'll begin to notice some changes off the coastline. we have this area of low pressure that's the one that's going to pay a visit to the bay area by tomorrow night and into friday. that means we have changing weather. so enjoy the day. the warmest day of the week and then these temperatures start to cool down as early as tomorrow and by friday, we could see some showers. our futurecast models showing you those clouds rolling in late in the day tomorrow and then we begin to see some showers so by friday morning we are back into the rain around the bay area. more showery activity after that possibly into saturday as well and doesn't look like a total rainout on saturday just some scattered showers. but after that, a stronger storm is heading in our

direction. a cold one out of the gulf of alaska. 72 degrees today sunshine into san jose. 70 half moon bay. 68 pacifica and hayward. east bay temperatures well into the 70s by the afternoon. and inside the bay we're enjoying some sunshine and about 71 in oakland, 70 in san francisco, and 68 degrees in bodega bay. next couple of days, we have time to clean out those gutters one more time and then it looks like that storm door does open up late thursday into friday. looks like the rain making a return showers possible into saturday. but by sunday a much colder storm drops in. that will be strong on sunday morning and then showers likely to continue in the first part of next week. >> i think we should rate your forecast. >> how was that one? >> let's find out from the students from palo alto high school by applause. what do you think of lawrence's forecast? thanks to a new system. cb's roberta gonzales is live i a south bay school district is saving a ton of money and water thanks to a new system. cbs 5's roberta gonzales live down in campbell with the smarter sprinklers. hi, roberta. >> reporter: hi there, frank. hi, michelle. doesn't you just hate it when you see people watering their lawns when it's raining outside or perhaps watering their lawns and it's really windy and all the water goes up into the atmosphere and evaporates? that's waste. that's why the campbell middle school has called on hydropoint's ceo chris spain here to tell us how hydropoint has made a difference here at campbell middle school.
